My Body Is The Boss!

With the recent media hack job and witch-hunt of celebrity chef Pete Evans, that has an all too familiar flavour of what the highly reputable Universal Medicine has also received from the media for promoting healthy living, it feels very timely to express a few things about my food experiences.

Firstly, one does begin to question what is at play when the media challenges the promotion of healthy eating and self-care, especially when you look at the appalling statistics of world-wide obesity, illness and disease that is increasingly on the rise.

How dare one empower themselves to feel what is right for them to eat,
and feel so much more vital and healthy as a result!
Now I am not one for diets, and I do not follow a ‘Paleo’ diet like Pete Evans advocates, because quite frankly ‘diets’ are driven from the head and do not consider how one feels after eating and our relationship with food - such important aspects to look at if one is aspiring to healthy eating. However if there was a diet that came the closest to my style of eating, it would be a Paleo diet because of my choice to eliminate gluten, grains, dairy & refined sugar. I also chose to eliminate alcohol & caffeine because I didn’t like the way they made me feel. The choice to make these decisions was because I valued feeling great everyday, and it made more sense to listen to my body than any so called ‘expert’ dietitian or book or mass imposed dietary guidelines. Surely it makes sense for every individual to stylise their diet based on their individual needs!

Serge Benhayon & Universal Medicine have never told me what to eat, nor would I let anyone have that power over me. What they have given me is much more valuable…presenting information that made sense about food, the body and energy. And as I always do, I simply tried things for myself and let my body tell me what felt right for me. And I knew that what felt right for me wasn’t necessarily what felt right for another…so I could only discover this for myself. It’s a work in progress as I discover and let go of patterns of emotional eating and beliefs about food that I had taken on.

No-one before Serge Benhayon had presented the notion to ‘feel what to eat’!
This was a revelation in itself and an empowerment back to me to trust what my body had already been communicating to me.

Personally, I have had a fairly healthy diet for most of my life, but couldn’t quite understand why my moods & energy levels would fluctuate on a daily basis. Whilst there would have been many contributing factors as a result of choices of how I was living, I can now really appreciate how important it is to feel what to eat. Food can dramatically impact my day in the way that it impacts how I feel – it can ‘take me out’ or ‘lift me up’. One hour after eating is a great gauge of what foods are right for my body and which ones are not. The more I listen to what my body is telling me after each meal, the more it teaches me about what is right for my body. Not just what I eat, but how much I eat and the energy I am in when I eat.

From first hand experience I can now confidently say…

– drinking alcohol is poison in my body and one of the most un-loving things I can do to myself
– gluten makes me tired and just about falling off my chair
– dairy clogs my sinuses and forehead and I can’t think to save myself
– too much sugar gets me fired up for about an hour or so and then I’m useless for the rest of the day because again I’m just about falling off my chair
–caffeine gets me even more fired up with zing, but also makes my hands shake & a couple of hours later I well and truly have fallen off my chair!

I applaud people like Serge Benhayon for not holding back in sharing information on matters of diet and wellbeing that are very clearly having enormous benefits to so many. What is really going on when the media attempt to shutdown those that are encouraging healthy eating? It doesn’t make sense right? But when I look at it from the perspective that what is being attempted to be shutdown is the value of what one feels in the body, in favour of text book theories and dietary guidelines – then I can understand. I understand because those that have invested interests in the plethora of beliefs & ideals in the food industry, stand to lose much should the consumer start to listen and care for their body.

To discredit the value of what the body communicates does not make sense to me anymore. To ignore the messages of the body in favour of the many dishes of knowledge we are served in the food and diet industries, is allowing the corruption to continue. A corruption that says what your body feels is not important.

We are living in a world where ‘everything is energy’ first and foremost.
How the body responds to food cannot be ignored no matter what a textbook may say.

We live in a world that has such a high rate of illness & disease that is not slowing down – this cannot also be ignored and clearly shows that the medical system does not have the answers.

However when you look at the students of Universal Medicine that have made lifestyle changes that include their diet, they are going against global trends and looking/feeling very vital indeed! How can this be?  What makes more sense?

1/ Following the recommended dietary guidelines or a specific rigid diet, that then leads to a way of eating that doesn’t feel great in the body? OR

2/ Listening to how the body responds when one eats so as to make food choices that allow you to continue feeling great?

Please excuse my bluntness here, but it really is a no-brainer!

We live in a pluralistic society where everyone has free will to choose what to eat and drink. ‘Live and let live’ is a great motto…and from what I have observed those who listen to their body are certainly living a far more vital and healthy life than those who do not.

At the end of the day the proof is in the faces of the people who are glowing with vitality and feeling great, which is why I always say…MY BODY IS THE BOSS!

Yes I agree Felicity, it is simple & there is so much wisdom that the body is sharing in every moment should we choose to listen.

I love what you have shared here Marika. I too have found that it has made a big difference to my energy levels and wellbeing when I listen to my body and eat according to what I feel to opposed to following a diet.

So true Marika, my body tells me what is ok and what is not, in no uncertain terms. Why would I listen to anything else, when this is all the truth I need.

Thanks for your comment Denise. I think its because we are so conditioned to listening to so called experts before anything that our body is communicating. There is so much wisdom in our body and it is communicating all of the time. The difference from person to person is how much we listen and honour this wisdom.

I really do feel that food is such a personal experience as we all live different lifestyles, are different sizes, weight, shape etc.

And if I were to follow what the 'experts' are saying I would go crazy as they are always changing their mind as to whats good for us and what is not, not to mention the amount of corruption there is in the food industry as there is lots of money to be made. So we always need to look at what is driving and behind the information that is being printed under the umbrella of 'expert'.

Having said that I also work with my doctor to have regular blood tests to check that my physiology is in balance, so as to give myself the level of care I deserve. I feel that listening to your body and using western medicine to support are a good combination.

So true, Marika, after all our body has to tell us what is good for it or not as it is the one digesting it or not. Would I eat glue (gluten) and would I drink a poison (alcohol)? No, it's not for me as I can't imagine how my body's digestion would cope with all of that and it doesn't.

Great article Marika ~ Love it. What you present here is so true our body offers much wisdom and is always giving us feedback about how we are as a result of the choices we are making we just have to be willing to listen :) It took me 5 bouts of tonsillitis and two ear infections in a 12month period for me to start listening to my body and the messages it had been giving me all my life about how certain foods effected me. Working as a Registered Nurse I had studied how intestinal health plays a big role in our immune function but it took a big year of illness for me to stop apply this truth to my everyday choices. I have found by listening to my about what to eat and how food effects me is the best "diet" I can have. Hear, hear "My Body is the Boss!"

Great point Bianca about the link between intestinal health & the immune system. I hear so many stories from clients as well as my own on the positive impact that choosing to listen to the body has had. For many it has been life changing. And food choices are just one of the many aspects of our lives where we can bring more self-care. The abuse of food is so clear when you see the high percentage of obesity that is continuing to rise. However from what I have observed, food abuse is just a symptom of a deeper underlying issue of a lack of self worth, because when one has a strong sense of self-worth and regard, it is very natural for us to look after and care for ourselves.

I'm not too familiar with Pete Evans as I live in the UK, but I have seen some of his recipes that look pretty delicious.
The one thing that does stand out to me is how fit & healthy he looks, now strangely, this is quite unusual for a chef, most of them are over weight, and often have drinking problems -that's a bit of a generalisation, but I can't think of any celebrity chefs that actually look vital, one that comes to mind recently is Jamie Oliver, he does a great job, but I have to say he looks bloated and red faced, and actually sounds congested. So in comparison, I would say Pete Evans is doing something right.

A great blog Marika. I love your comment Laura - common sense also leads me to have observed how chefs are generally overweight.
Another observation is how when I explain to people my daughter has a condition which means she can't eat sugar, they feel sorry for her? Yes it's hard but only because of what the norm' in society is - my response is always along the lines of, actually we celebrate it because she is so healthy. When the percentage of obese people in the world is so high, why is making a lifestyle choice to not consume sugar met with so much resistance and shock? Could it be it makes people feel uncomfortable because it makes them look at how much they consume? I am going less into hiding my lifestyle choices to avoid this awkwardness and less into making excuses and more into claiming the choices I make in my life to make it more vital and loving. Thanks Marika for a great discussion.
